Green Beach

A green sea turtle rests on the olivine sand of Papakōlea — Hawaii's famous green sand beach — while turquoise surf crashes against the dark volcanic cliffs behind it. Rendered in pastel pencil on sandpaper, the textured ground does double duty here: it gives the volcanic rock its rough, layered character and lends the breaking waves a luminous, spray-filled energy that smooth paper cannot achieve.
